Spain wins duet title, China second

(Beijing, April 18) Spaniards Andrea Fuentes/Gemma Mengual scored 97.663 points to win the duet event of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Olympic Games Synchronized Swimming Qualification Tournament at the National Aquatics Center today. The silver and bronze went to China's Jiang Tingting/Jiang Wenwen and Japanese duo Harada Saho/Suzuki Emiko respectively.

Among the 32 pairs competing in the tournament, the Spanish duo, runners-up at the 2007 World Championships, finished first in technical routine the day before. Japanese Harada Saho and Suzuki Emiko were second, followed by China's twin sisters Jiang Wenwen and Jiang Tingting.

In free routine held today, the China's simmers performed to the music of Salangane and scored 48.333 in both technical merit and artistic impression.

Following the Chinese were Andrea Fuentes and Gemma Mengual, who chose the music of Flamma, Flamma in their performance. Their brilliant flexibility, grace, artistry and precise timing earned 49.00 both technically and artistically and won the tournament with a total of 97.663.

Speaking of the short cooperation with her new partner Andrea Fuentes, Mengual noted they tied in pretty well in spite of the duration, adding, like the Chinese, "the Spanish national team swimmers always take training together too."

Japanese duo Harada Saho/Suzuki Emiko managed 48.084, falling 0.249 behind the China's duo. Aggregately, the Chinese twins won the silver and the Japanese got the bronze.
